Our Community Cares spotlights Michelle Birolini and Braintree Elder Affairs Department!
Michelle Birolini is Coordinator of Volunteers and Activities for Department of Elder Affairs. Michelle typically loves the fun part of her position - coordinating enjoyable activities and social events at the Braintree Senior Center. Unfortunately isolation and loneliness, caused by the pandemic and the center being forced to close, has taken much of the fun away. The department’s focus is now making sure senior citizens have what they need to survive isolation and live comfortably through this crisis. Delivering food and supplies remains the top priority. Elder affairs has been working closely with the Marge Crispin Center to make sure our aging population is supported.
Michelle credits her team with getting creative to stay in touch with our senior citizens. They have partnered with BCAM TV to provide special TV programing as a way to reach out as most seniors are not on social media and the internet. Frank, the transportation driver, and all the other volunteers check in with as many residents as they can on a regular basis. Michelle’s sixth grade daughter Sharon has coordinated a group of students from South and East Braintree Middle schools to make cards and deliver messages of hope and inspiration too!
The negative impact of isolation and loneliness put the health of senior population at most risk. Our senior citizens are truly in need of our love and support! Michelle encourages all of us to reach out to all our neighbors. Department of Elder Affairs encourages any senior citizen to reach out if they need support or help and call (781)848-1963. Donating to the weekly Saturday Food Drive sponsored by Braintree Community Response and Assistance and the Marge Crispin Center also support these efforts!
